Student Union Installation
Photo installation located in the student union of University of Miami designed to tell the story of student life.
This photo installation was designed to showcase the four pillars of student life at University of Miami: Resiliency, Tradition, Belonging, Inovation, and Advocacy. Each photo was selected to showcase both the past and present of student life as it relates to a specific pillar. With a budget of $18,000 this installation needed to be modern and engaging.
In this project I developed the concept, designed the layout to scale and selected the final photos for the installation. Working closely with university leadership, it was important to tell a holistic story of student life with only a few select vibrant photos. Once the layout and photos were finalized, I sized and added titles and captions to the selected photos after they were edited by our photographer. The captions were a collaborative effort, with some written by me and others by our central communications office, then edited by me. I also wrote the introductory statement at the beginning of the installation.
Installation Introduction
Dynamic History, Vibrant Traditions
Founded in 1925, the University of Miami enjoys a rich, diverse, and vibrant history that encompasses many notable moments in the lives of students and during the tenure of each of our six presidents: Bowman F. Ashe, Jay F. W. Pearson, Henry King Stanford, Edward T. Foote II, Donna E. Shalala, and Julio Frenk. From educating and guiding students to celebrating their achievements as they join the University’s many accomplished alumni, this installation highlights several milestones over the years that have shaped who we are today. The University has become an innovative leader in healthcare with medical education, groundbreaking research, and leading-edge patient care. Today, the University educates thousands of students across three campuses located in Coral Gables, Virginia Key, and downtown Miami.
Resiliency, tradition, belonging, innovation, and advocacy; each collection of photos in this installation represents these values. Our resiliency has held fast through challenging times. The strong traditions we perpetuate provide communal experiences for all ’Canes. Our community fosters a sense of belonging where we care for one another. We value the drive for innovation with which our students approach every challenge they face. Even beyond the University’s three campuses, our commitment to advocacy for our local and global communities remains strong. This combination of values embodies what it means to be a Miami Hurricane. We invite you to walk along the wall and experience the culture, traditions, and achievements that have been part of student life throughout our history.
